You Ride So Kids Can Ride!

Saturday, August 20, 2022

It's back!  In our THIRD Annual Rotary Ride for You Can Ride 2, the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove is raising money for You Can Ride 2, a program that puts kids with special needs on highly customized adapted bikes that best suit their conditions and abilities.  By taking part in the ride, you'll help ensure the program continues to have the resources it needs to do its work.  Your $100 registration fee gets you an $80 tax receipt for a charitable donation to the You Can Ride 2 program and a chance to win cash in the poker run.  Riders can raise pledges that go directly to the cause, too!  Use the links below to learn more.

Poker Run, Raffle, and 50/50

Your registration includes one chance to win cash prizes in our poker run.  Build a five-card poker hand as you collect cards at each stop on the ride.  If your hand is the best at the end of the event, you'll take home the top cash prize of $500.  Second place gets $250, and third place gets $100.  $20 goes to the rider who builds the worst complete poker hand!  Extra entries into the poker run are available for $20.

In addition to the poker run, our stop sponsors have put up great prizes you can win in a raffle to be held at the event's wrap-up BBQ and we're running a 50/50, too!

Appreciation BBQ

When the ride wraps up at the Goodwill Impact Centre in Edmonton, hop off your bike to enjoy a burger or hot dog as well as other refreshments on us.  Check your raffle tickets to see if you won and turn in your poker hand to be eligible for a cash prize!

You'll have an opportunity to see how the You Can Ride 2 program operates out of the Impact Centre and meet some of the volunteers who make the program a reality.

The Cause

You Can Ride 2 believes that all children should be able to experience the joy and freedom of riding a bike.  They help children with special needs acquire the skills and access bikes tailored to them at little or no cost.

Led by a team of volunteer physical and occupational therapists, bike mechanics, parents, and other caring people, their "Borrow a Bike" program lends adapted bikes, many of which cost several thousands of dollars, to families who may not be able to afford to replace the bikes as kids outgrow them.  You Can Ride 2 also run a "Learn to Ride" program that teaches children to ride a two-wheeled bicycle independently.

The Rotary Club of Spruce Grove has been a steadfast supporter of You Can Ride 2 since 2014, when our members first volunteered at one of their bike fitting events.  We followed that up in 2015 by granting the program over $80,000 and helping them secure permanent space.  Kids from all over the Edmonton capital region benefit from this program, including several kids from the Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, and Parkland County area every year.  This year, we hope to continue this fun event that can help sustain You Can Ride 2's operations and keep hundreds of special kids riding!
