Friends of Rotary, May 2018
Hello to our Friends of Rotary.

One of the interesting things recently with Rotary is the partnership we have established with the other local Rotary Clubs, the Rotary Club  of Stony Plain and Parkland After Dark.  We have decided to create a 3 club partnership to support one school for the Amarok Society.  In the past the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove has supported a school for $10 000.00 per year.

A reminder, each school teaches 25 mothers for 2 hours per day and then these mothers go back to their huts and teach their own children and their neighbour's children.  In total each school teaches 25 mothers and these mothers teach about 125+ children.  This results in a cost of about $80.00 per child per year.  In addition to the education of mothers and children one of the objectives is to oppose extremism.

At last year's Lobsterfest Cash Appeal for the Amarok Society our community generously donated $29 500.00.  As a result of this we decided to see if we could use these funds to expand the number of schools Amarok supports.  We have established this model of 3 clubs sponsoring one school which significantly decreases the cost per club.  We are now promoting this idea to other District 5370 Clubs.  We provide a small contribution to these clubs for the first 2 years.  We expect to be able to increase the number of Amarok Society schools by 2 or 3 for next year.

Secondly, this year the traditional Lobsterfest is being changed to a Black and White Gala, celebrating our Rotary Club of Spruce Grove's 25th anniversary.

This change also comes with a total change in fundraising.  We will not have any fundraising at the event.  No Silent or Live auction, no 50 - 50, or Heads and Tails and no Cash Appeal.  All fundraising is happening with our club members approaching community members and businesses for a contribution to the club in consideration to all the service we are providing and have provided to our community over the last 25 years.  For more info contact a club member.  Tickets for the event are $200.00 and come with a tax receipt for $100.00.   Although the ticket price is up most people will spend less as there is no fundraising at the event.  Please contact a member this week if interested in attending.
