Heritage Classic of Curling (Yeah Right)
In the spring of 2012, Rotarians Allan Shaw, John Moquin, Don Bay, and Brad Mastaler travelled to Laurel, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C. to compete in the International Curling Fellowship of Rotarians.  Against all odds, they won the championship!  In our 2020 virtual auction, the team put out a challenge to any courageous curlers who might want to knock off world champions.  Jason Svenningsen answered the call.  Long-delayed by COVID-19, Jason and Tammy Svenningsen and additional Stony Plain Rotarians Mardy Kulak and Tanya Tinney will face off against Allan, John, Brad, and Angus (standing in for Don Bay who is unable to attend due to a prior commitment).

Friday night at 7:00 PM, please join the teams upstairs at the Spruce Grove Curling Club lounge for some pre-game fellowship.  The game is scheduled for 9:00 PM, but the teams will start earlier if there's an open sheet of ice.

Rio Muchacho Water Project Update
Last year, The Rotary Foundation approved a global grant for construction of a potable water system in the Rio Muchacho valley near Bahia de Caraquez, Ecuador.  Our club is an international partner on this project, the second time we've worked with the club in Bahia to bring clean drinking water to a community.  Last week, we received an update from Bill Stumbaugh, the project lead in Ecuador.  Please see his message below and a link to some pictures are videos of the water diversion phase of the project taking shape.

Dear Rotarians,

I´m writing to provide an update to our sponsors about the progress of this Global Grant project, #2119179.

Last month, we began the project construction by successfully drilling a test water well bore 30 meters deep that produced an abundance of water.  However, the water stinks horribly and has a milky color.  Maybe sulfur or some other element...we don't know and opted to not bother to test it.
So, we changed to option B which is to capture the surface water near the point of the river's origin, upstream from 99% of the population.   The work to create the capture point is now in progress.   Some photos are attached.

A pipeline is being laid from the capture point following the river shoreline downstream to the place where the test well was drilled.  From there it will be pumped up to the ridge on the side of the valley where water tanks will be placed to store water as well as create the lift for gravity flow downstream to the distribution network and the homes.

The rainy season has begun.  It will likely mean that at some point, we´ll have to slow down system construction as the dirt roads and river crossings will become difficult and hazardous.  Also, the Omnicron is now here, and more restrictions are back in place.  Schools closed again, restaurants are high capacity, etc.  Hope you are all well.  Any questions you may have will be welcomed.

Land Based Learning at the Change Centre

Land-based Learning: Tipi Teachings

Change Health Alberta is a registered non-profit and charity that focuses on advancing health through the key pillars of physical activity, nutrition and social connection.  These areas are co-designed with community for community to honour the unique land, relationships and regional assets across Alberta.  Since its inception, CHANGE Health Alberta has worked to build the community and offer meaningful learning experiences. This year, our organization has invested in the creation of the CHANGE Centre which enables us to focus on more live events that bring the community together.

What?

Tipi Teachings is a partnership with our friends from Treaties 6, 7, and 8 who have been invited by CHANGE Health to share their story and create space for you to share your story. You are being invited to create authentic social connections, explore new stories and experience the land.  Each date offers a new experience where you might bring your own questions and form new friendships or perhaps, discover that we are all truly related in some way. The goal of this is to protect our mental, emotional and physical health by deepening community and honouring the land.

Where?

The Change Centre is located in Magnolia, Alberta along the Pembina River at 54404 Range Road 65.  These events, including stew and bannock, are held primarily outside.  The teachings are held inside of a warmed tipi.  All guests are welcome to bring activewear and enjoy the 15km of trails before or after the formal teachings.  Physical abilities will be accommodated.
