Friends of Rotary, April 2018
A number of interesting things have been going on with the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove over the last few months.

First of all, recently we became involved with an organization, Very Special Paws,  that trains service dogs.  They are working with our local Victim Services organization.  We have become partners with these groups and have sponsored a service dog for the local Victim Services that services the Tri- Region.  In the next couple of months the local Victim Services organization will have a service dog that specializes in providing comfort for the people that our Victim Services serves.  We are excited about his partnership.

Say hello to...Wicket.

Secondly, at our 2017 Lobsterfest, our community contributed $29 500.00 to the Amarok Society in a cash appeal.  The Amarok Society manages 20 schools in the poorest of slums in Bangladesh.  The Amarok Schools teach 25 mothers for 2 hours each day and then the mothers return to their huts and teach their children and their neighbour's children.  This results in about 125 children receiving an education.  If we look at the cost of this education the program costs less than $80.00 per child per year.  The primary principles are first to teach women and the second principle is to not have capital costs.  Other than a small hut to teach the women there is no major capital cost.

For the last 2 years the Rotary Club of  Spruce Grove has sponsored a school.  A school costs $10 000.00 per year.

As a result of the generous contribution of our community the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove has developed a plan to have each school sponsored by several Rotary Clubs or even individuals and businesses.  One way to look at the plan is to have 3 clubs sponsor 1 school.  This reduces the cost per club and we think we can significantly increase the number of schools Amarok Society runs.   Our club is helping this process with a little seed money to help the partnerships get going.

As a result of this plan the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove has partnered with the Rotary Club of Stony Plain and the Rotary Club of Parkland After Dark.  We are using this model to promote to other clubs in our region.  We have recently received these pictures and the new banner that demonstrates our local partnership.

Thirdly...and also very interesting the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove will be having a major celebration on May 26th.  This year we will be celebrating our 25th anniversary.
Our event, as the poster below indicates is a Black and White, Saturday Night event celebrating our the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove's 25 years.  For more info about the event please contact a Rotarian.
