Champions of Good Event, April 18th. I see in the Examiner a great article and ad. Below is an edited version of the article. The article also address the idea that this event and presentation would be good for anybody in our community. Please forward the info if you think someone would enjoy attending even if not connected to a Youth being Recognized. Challenges build resiliency. That’s the message Cheryl Bernard has for youth and attendants of the Champions of Good ceremony Tuesday, April 18th at Horizon Stage. The Olympic silver medalist curler will share her story as the keynote speaker at the event to recognize youth volunteers. Champions of Good is an event created by the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove and Goodwill Industries of Alberta to celebrate the outstanding service of youth within the community who make a difference. During the evening, Bernard will reflect on the pressures facing youth and encourage them to confront challenges head-on to overcome them and achieve their dreams. Bernard developed resiliency herself in sports and many other aspects of life.
“Starting my own business and having to struggle through that, that’s tough,” she said. From there, she pushed herself to make it to the Olympics, representing her country and earning silver with Team Canada in 2010. She emphasized there are more failures along the way than successes, but that’s part of the learning process. “I had a note on my mirror for years when I played sports that said, ‘I never lose. I either win or I learn,’” she stated. “I believe that in all aspects of life. Those are really great moments if we choose to view them that way.” Bernard’s message is a timeless one that will resonate with every generation in the audience. “I was 23 when I started my own business,” recalled the 50-year-old. “I still have it happen every day — I’m still learning and I’m still trying new things and I’m still failing. That’s all of us… and in the end, it’s the resilience, but the resilience comes from making the choice to view things differently.” Tickets are required to attend the ceremony.
