I bring this edition of the RAP to you a few days before New Year's. Happy New Year to all!! Over the past couple of weeks we have received several card/notes from a couple of the organizations we support. There may have been more but these are the ones I know about. I find them inspirational.
1. Amarok Society The Amarok Society sent us a message/Christmas Card that included the following...
It's been another year of questing toward peace on earth and good will to all...and while we're always aiming forward the holidays seem like a good time of year for looking back.
The mothers in our schools have made a huge difference in their communities, where children are now finding education and opportunity, and the overall attitudes are transforming from embattled despair to inclusive hope and optimism. We want to thank our friends and supporters who have made a stand for the future of the children we're reaching and whose compassion is changing the world.
Note...The Rotary Club of Spruce Grove sponsors an Amarok School in the slums of Bangladesh. Many of us have met Gem and/or Tanyss Munro, who founded this program. Amarok runs 20 schools in the slums of Bangladesh as well as 2 in Pakistan. Each school teaches about 25 local moms for 2 hours per day and then the moms return to their huts and teach their kids and their neighbours kids. In the end we support the training of 25 moms and the teaching of about 125 kids.
2. You Can Ride 2 Below is an interesting picture.. In early 2017, Goodwill Industries will be opening a large warehouse on the west end of Edmonton. Goodwill has provided this storage space to You Can Ride 2...as well as a space for a workshop.
At the 2015 Lobsterfest a one time, Fund a Need was initiated supporting YCR2. Thanks to Barry Twynam for putting this together. In 20 min. our club and generous donors contributed $82 500.00 to YCR2!! Now Goodwill is providing a space for storage and a workshop for working on the bikes. This contribution to the YCR2 group is worth 10's of thousands of $$ over the next 10 years. I am not sure of exact details. For those who attended the Pancake Breakfast on Oct. 1st, a story told by a mother of a child who had received the benefit of one of these bikes was very moving. Barry received a card from YCR2 and here is the hand written part...
A permanent storage facility would never have been possible had it not been for your club. Thank you so much for bringing our programs to the next level and for allowing us to better support kids with disabilities for years to come. You have touched the lives of hundreds of families. From the bottom of our hearts, Thank You!

3. Speaker, Jan. 5th, Tony Zeglen. Tony's topic will be, Reunion 11 - one way to record your family tree with data, documents and photos.
4. New Years Eve...Central Park. Check out, Facebook, New Years Celebration Spruce Grove. 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Family event with lots of fun and fireworks at 8:30. Check out the Facebook site. Looking for volunteers. Meeting at Perks, Dec. 29th, 7:00 PM.
5. Reminder, Speaker Assigment will have a different format starting in February. The committees of Club Service, Membership and PR will plan the speakers. Others interested in helping us out please let Catherine Pederson or John Oldham know. Looking for any ideas you may have for speakers or major events.
As we wind up 2016 we can look back as the 2 stories above do. Remarkable contributions. The Rotary Club of Spruce Grove has contributed to over 20 local and 6 International organizations, outgoing and incoming youth exchanges, an assortment of other youth opportunities and over time a number of significant major projects in the City of Spruce Grove.
