As per usual, we will cancel our Thursday lunch meetings during the Christmas and New Years period, which means no meetings on December 26, 2013 and January 2, 2014. We will return to our regular schedule on Thursday, January 9th, 2014.
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you and the Rotarians from your club for the very generous donation made to the ShelterBox Canada's Philippine Typhoon Appeal.
I invite all members to send me their thoughts which you would like to share with fellow Club members on an issue affecting our Club or the Rotary world. Submission deadline is the Sunday of every week. Enjoy this week's article, and please feel free to respond to those last words or submit your own article for future pbulication.
As a Rotary member, you make a difference in your community and internationally. Last year, because of the efforts of Rotarians and their friends and family voting daily from their computers, smartphones, and tablets, we received 2.5 million airline miles through United's 10 Million Charity Miles Giveaway. The miles were used to change lives by helping with humanitarian projects, such as transporting children with birth defects to hospitals for treatments they can't receive at home. Vote daily for Rotary until the end of today here.
Any Rotarian in our Club with an interest in being a part of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada event (described in detail under read more), should contact me here as soon as possible.
Elizabeth Marsh "knocked it out of the ball park" at Festival Place with her characterization and amazing "Memory" in Cats! Truly wonderful. Elizabeth is shown below in her Cats costume with Marlee Monaghan and Alex Kamlah.
From District 5370 Governor Betty Screpnek:
You just never know when you are going to run into a fellow Rotarian. Meet Rotarian Elizabeth Marsh from the Rotary Club of Spruce Grove. We attended the final sold out performances of Lloyd Weber's Cats at Festival place tonight and one of main Cats, Grizabella, was an outstanding performance by a very talented actress and singer, Rotarian Elizabeth Marsh (second photo below with Betty). Amazing performance!
David Kinnaird of Edmonton Riverview is looking to make contact with car enthusiasts for a project involving disadvantaged youth. Are you a car enthusiast, i.e. do you belong to, or have links to, car, street rod, or truck clubs?
Once we locate some enthusiasts, David will share some information from Ontario where a car club has linked up with a high school to support interests in youth at risk in some interesting ways. David is just waiting for a video or slideshow on the topic to arrive.
If you are interested or know of other contacts David might pursue, please contact him here or Rita Sharek here.

208 seconds. That's the length of time between Canada geese getting sucked into the engines of USA Airways Flight 1549 and Capt. Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger taking an Airbus A320-214 intoa miraculous glide into the Hudson River in 2009 saving 155 souls.
Two seconds. That's about the length of time I had to pick myself off the middle of an icy three lane roadway in Fort McMurray and jump onto a snowbank after being hit by a vehicle while on a January run in in 2005.
