Spruce Grove Rotary in Partnership with SGPL

Through the past year, money that our club has donated to the Spruce Grove Library has been put towards:

1) Osmo coding and gaming systems, virtual reality programs and tablets with new apps to the Innovation Lab
2) they have expanded children and youth programs.  Also expanding the Little Free Libraries to our neighbouring Indigenous communities.
3) introducing doll themed literacy backpacks, Indigenous adult and children's books and the all-in-one computers to a new group of young users.

The library has completed a new Plan of Service in 2018 which will officially launch in January 2019.  The library's three areas of focus for the next 5 years are:

Visit a comfortable place: Community members of all ages will have barrier-free access to welcoming physical and virtual spaces.
Practice and Promote Inclusion: Community members of all ages will have programs and services that embrace diversity through acceptance, appreciation, and recognition of all people in our community.
Encourage Literacy: Community members of all ages will have programs and services that provide opportunity for life-long learning while helping them make sense of the world in a variety of ways.

Thank-you to Stephanie Kuhn (Community Services Librarian) from SGPL for coming to speak to our club about the exciting stuff happening and the plans for the future at the library.

Silly Santa Auction: What is it? What am I supposed to do?
Every year the club holds a small auction at one of our meetings in November that raises money to buy gifts for the women at Wings of Providence.  Wings of Providence is a second stage women's shelter.  The gifts that are bought each year are a housecoat, a pair of fuzzy socks, a mug, and a little treat for each woman at the shelter.  That number is usually close to 50.  It's a small gesture that brings so much joy to the women there.

So what do you need to do?  First off, if you have a gift that you were given that you know you won't use, wrap that gift up, tag it with a little poem or hint about what it may be (but try to keep it as vague as possible, it's more fun that way) and bring it to the meeting.  You can bring multiple gifts if you like but please try to bring one at least.  Then the gifts are auctioned off and you'll probably not have any clue what you're buying but that's not the point!  It's funny to see what you thought it was and what it actually is.  If you have nothing to auction off, you can still help by bidding and buying, so bring some money or the cheque book.  Maybe bring a guest if you think they'll enjoy the show or potentially buy a gift.  All the money raised goes straight to buying the gifts for the women at Wings of Providence.

Upcoming Things to Consider

Upcoming Things to Consider:

November 22nd - Silly Santa Auction, after the meeting if you can stay and wrap/prepare the gifts for Wings of Providence, that would be awesome.  Many hands make light work and it usually only takes 30 mins or so.

November 23d - Sing Away Polio at Dianne Brown's house (77 Waverley Cres).  Bring your Toonies and Loonies!  Rules will be provided at the event.  Event goes from 7pm to 10pm.

December 13th - Janine Peters: Status of the Five-Year Strategy to Reduce Poverty and Homelessness

Come hear Janine Peter, who is the Director of FCSS and Social Planning with the City of Spruce Grove, update us on the status of the Five Year Strategy to Reduce Poverty and Homelessness in our community.

December 20th - Annual Christmas Party at Porta Romana.  More info to come.

This year we have elected to support an initiative that provides backpacks for those in need.  This would include our local homeless citizens and also people who may be in crisis.  We are partnering with Alberta Health Services at the Stony Hospital, with the local RCMP (they will have a few backpacks in their patrol cars) and potentially first responders.

These backpacks will contain essentials like toothbrush, toothpaste, sanitary items for females, mitts, touque, socks, and a thermal undershirt, among other items.  The backpacks will also have the Rotary Wheel Symbol on them.

Tickets now available from Catherine!
