May 6th- Craig Curran-Morton, Board Chair, and Sheri Ratsoy, Executive Director, of the Parkland Food Bank to present: Together We Can Do More - Future facility of Parkland Food Bank, possible collaborative space for multiple social service agencies.
May 20th- Dr. Niigaan Sinclair, he was a keynote speaker at the District Learning conference in April. He is an aboriginal Associate Professor at the University of Manitoba and a very accomplished writer, editor and activist. Catherine has heard him speak and says that he is amazing. Please plan to attend as I believe this will be an awesome opportunity. This would also be a great meeting to "bring" a guest.
“The Grannies Coat Challenge” (no real animals were hurt in the making of this stunt)
Not a Rotary event but just as fun and with the help of some of my fellow Rotarians. What started out as a friend helping another friend with a possible seat cover for a motor bike has turned into a significant fund raiser for You Can Ride 2. Dubbed the “Grannies Coat Challenge” and a bit of an exercise in humility. Barry Twynam set the wheels in motion for a rather significant fund raiser. A few months back getting ready for a new riding season I mentioned to my fellow riding buddy (Barry) that I would like to get a fur or plush seat liner for the seat of my bike to soften it up a bit for my long rides. Barry pipes up “I have an old fur coat that I can give you for this purpose”. Barry is the “mister has a thing for everything” kind of guy As you know. He also stated, “I'll bring it by your office”. When he brought the faux fur jacket over to my office, I jokingly slipped it on and the kidding and laughing began. We snapped a quick picture to which I posted it on Facebook just for kicks. This photo led to comments like “Hey I will give $100 to your charity of choice if you will ride with that jacket on your bike from Spruce Grove to the Stony plain Tim Horton’s”. Always one for a good challenge I thought sure (I'll do almost anything for 100 bucks and charity). “The Granny Coat Challenge” was born. I posted a second photo and enlightened several friend’s family and people I work with about how I had been challenged to do “The Granny Coat challenge”. It was at that time that many others jumped on board with equal or greater pledges towards the cause. My always helpful assistant (Ally) also thought it would be a good idea if I don a more pimp type look to the already humiliating granny coat. Beads, glasses, and the coats and we were ready to go. This past week on Monday April 26 at 3:00 I did the challenge. Barry as well as Brad took some photos to prove that I had completed my end of the bargain. These photos were posted on Facebook as proof! At last count it would appear that we have raised close to $1200 for You Can Ride 2. I am very appreciative for everyone that stepped-up pledge, support and to assist in raising these funds. To Barry for setting the wheels in motion. For supplying the humiliating and stinky fur coat. All my friends, family, Rotarians, and business supporters who always take the opportunity to keep me humble. I really had fun and look forward to dropping of a cheque for this great cause some time next week.

A little back story of this project just in case you've missed it:
This was the request that our committee considered and approved as a $500.00 matching Project of Passion project.
Our Spruce Grove GSA was looking at purchasing or having two large picnic tables built. The youth group normally meets inside but due to the ongoing pandemic they have been meeting outdoors as much as possible.
They had been trying to meet in the parks and green space’s around Spruce Grove, unfortunately this didn’t work out so well. They were very interested in connecting with either a local carpenter to pay for the tables or to purchase the materials locally and have a work party to assemble the tables. As this was a matching grant, the GSA had to come up with their portion of the money for the project.
As of today this project has been satisfied financially and the picnic tables have been delivered.
Congratulations to Jody and the Spruce Grove GSA on completing this very important project.
Well, the next time you see Keith Porter, Rotary Club of Stony Plain be sure to mention that it was great to hear that his Grandson followed in his footsteps. For those of you that have met Hunter Porter, either playing the piano as our guests entered our Gala or maybe you met him as he delivered Brown Bag Lunches for Auggie’s Cafe in 2020, you know what a wonderful young man he is.
Well, as of today he has accepted a full athletic and academic scholarship to NCAA Division 1, Morehead State University in Kentucky. Hunter has worked hard to be recognized in a crowd of young ball players that all want to play professional baseball.

This will be a 60-minute fast-paced virtual Gala for The Rotary Foundation (TRF) designed to help Rotarians, clubs and Districts in Zones 28 & 32 meet and even exceed their 2020-2021 goals for both the Annual Fund and PolioPlus fundraising.
This variety show will be co-hosted by RI Director Valarie Wafer and TRF Trustee Dean Rohrs and feature Master of Ceremonies Past RI Director Jeffry Cadorette, distinguished speakers, entertainers, a live auction, inspiring stories about service supported by TRF, and much more!
Tickets to the virtual event will be by a donation of US$100, 500, 1000 or 5000 (+ service fee) that will be directed 75 per cent to the Annual Fund of TRF and 25 per cent to the PolioPlus fund. You will receive a receipt for tax purposes and will be awarded Paul Harris Fellowship points for your donation.
